Everyone has their favorite watering hole. A place were you are always excited to go to because you know you are going to enjoy great cocktails. The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Company is certainly one of our favorites. It had been a while since we had been there and another visit was long overdue.
The Franklin Bar, as referred to by locals, has a wonderful history. It was a front for America’s largest alcohol running ring during prohibition. It opened in the late 1920s by the legendary Philly gangster Max “Boo Boo” Hoff. The Franklin Mortgage Company ran more liquor then even Al Capone. Today, it’s a fantastic speak-easy that evokes memories of the past. When you walk in, it’s long and narrow, low lit and simple in decor. What’s not simple are the outstanding cocktails. This will be your hardest choice when coming here, what cocktails to order.
The cocktail menu is amazing, the bartenders are wizards. It never ceases to amaze us how they come up with their drinks. We started the night with two fantastic cocktails, Inherent Vice and Nobody’s Fault But Mine. Inherent Vice consisted of tahini washed bourbon, banana, cacao and aromatic bitters. Nobody’s Fault But Mine was made with Nutella washed Rittenhouse rye, averna and Grand Marnier. Tahini washed bourbon? Nutella washed rye? Yes, you read that correctly. This is what I mean when I say how amazing their cocktails are and how original they craft them. Both were absolutely delicious. The balance they achieve with sweet and aromatic flavors is stunning.
Next up, we ordered the Natura Morta, made with apple and pear brandy, Plymouth Navy strength, overproof Jamaican rum, creole shrubb, lemon and apple pecan orgeat and the Minutiae which was made with calvados, cask strength Brennivin Becherovka, strega, chicory, graham cracker, lemon, cream and egg white. I couldn’t even begin to explain half the ingredients but one thing I can tell you, these drinks were mind blowing! The Minutiae was so good that we ordered another round! If you want to experience cocktails on a whole other level, you have to come here.
The Franklin Bar is tops in our book when in comes to fine crafted cocktails. If you have no idea what the ingredients are, don’t hesitate to ask. The incredibly friendly staff and bartenders will be more than happy to answer any questions you have. And don’t be afraid to take a chance and order something off the wall. Chances are you will love your drink! If you are looking for something different to do, or if you want to have a top notch cocktail, head to the Franklin Bar. Once you go, you’ll be back again and again. Trust me!
