Pablo Batista at South

As you are all aware by now, we love listening to live music. If you haven’t been to South yet, well, why not? It is one of the, if not, the best places to hear live jazz music in the city. Luckily, we live a short ten to fifteen minute walk from South and we were recently there to catch Pablo Batista and his Latin jazz ensemble. This night, we got a special treat because renoun trumpeter Freddie Hendrix was playing with the band. It was an amazing night! And also on this night, our good friend Felix was joining us. He is from the Dominican Republic so he was eager and curious to hear the music.

Before the band took stage, we ordered some food and drinks. South always does a great job with both these categories. We kept it simple this night and ordered the South Sazerac and the Jackson Square cocktails. The South Sazerac was made with Bulleit Rye, Salignac cognac, Demerara sweet syrup, house blended bitters and absinthe mist. The Jackson Square was a classic old fashioned featuring Mitcher’s Rye. Both were absolutely delicious. I’m not really sure which one I liked more!

For food, we started with their fresh oysters which are always delicious. We also ordered the mac & cheese and the crispy rock shrimp. Once again, South delivered. Everything was delicious! If you are hesitant on trying oysters for whatever reason, go out on a limb and try these. They are so fresh and do not taste briny at all. The mac & cheese was perfectly cooked and was served with an heirloom tomato puree which by itself was amazing. The rock shrimp was perfectly fried and served with a buttermilk marinate, tomato relish and comeback sauce. Our friend Felix ordered South’s amazing beef short ribs. We’ve had them before and they literally melt in your mouth. They are served with a barbecue sauce, creamed collards and rosemary baby yukon gold potatoes.

During dinner, the Pablo Batista band came on and were fantastic. It was the first time we heard them and Freddie Hendrix. I really can’t stress enough how wonderful they were. Whenever they come back to the Philadelphia area, we are not going to miss them. As an added bonus, Freddie Hendrix’s wife was sitting the next table over from us. It was a sold out performance and we could see and hear why. Please make sure you give them a listen.

We always love going to South. The food and drinks are always excellent and the featured band is always top notch. I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful restaurant and music venue so close to where we live.
