On a refreshingly cool day in the city of Brotherly Love, Von Trapp Brewing Company premiered three interesting cheeses and thirst-quenching beers at the Tria Taproom located on 20th and Walnut Streets. The ambience as usual was welcoming, the food fantastic, and my pre-tasting cocktails were delicious featuring local brands Stateside Vodka, Philadelphia Distilling and Dock Street Spirits’ Vicio Mezcal. My absolutely loving fiancé Eric was kind enough to taste all three beers on tap since I cannot differentiate the various flavors of beer. Sorry folks. I love my wine and cocktails, not beer.
To start our evening, Executive Vice President Sam Von Trapp took some time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about the beers being featured, how long it generally takes to get a good batch, and the fact that Tria is currently the only restaurant in the entire state of Pennsylvania that they are distributing to. The three featured beers were the Von Trapp Bohemian Pilsner, the Von Trapp Golden Helles and the Von Trapp Vienna-Style Lager. Eric prefers lagers so he was quite surprised when he actually liked the pilsner most! He’s more a wine and cocktail person like me, but will have a beer once in a while. All three beers were good overall. They were light and refreshing but the pilsner had more body to it. Surprise indeed!
Tria filled up very quickly for this night’s event. On top of the good beer and cheeses, the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Choir were on hand to sing a medley from the “Sound of Music”. They did a great job and sounded great.
The three cheeses featured were the Von Trapp Mt. Alice, the Von Trapp Savage and the Von Trapp Mad River Blue. All three were delicious and were paired with bread, honey, nuts and blueberries. We both thought the honey overpowered the cheeses but the other condiments paired beautifully with the cheeses. My personal favorite was the Von Trapp Mt. Alice with the blueberries. Eric had a preference for the River Blue with the blueberries. All are made from cow’s milk from the Von Trapp farms in Stowe.
As always, the food and drinks at Tria are delicious. Before the Von Trapp tasting, we ordered tuna tartare, crispy calamari, heirloom tomato salad, and a tuna burger. Drinks varied from the Sparkling Vesper to the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. Everything was fantastic! We’ve yet to have a bad meal at any Tria location! Our favorite drink was the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. If you love mezcal, you’ll love this drink. Dock Street Spirits’ did a great job with their brand of mezcal. Eric had read about it just a week ago and was eager to try it. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long to do so. Well done Dock Street!
In addition to great drinks, food and cheese, there was a contest with the winner getting a complementary trip to the Von Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. We checked their website out and so should you. It is absolutely beautiful! We didn’t win but that won’t stop us from visiting their lodge one of these days.
